Improving maths teaching and learning at Little Ealing Primary with White Rose Maths

Little Ealing Primary School – or LEP - based in South Ealing, provides education to local children aged 3 to 11. The school’s mission to help pupils ‘engage, enrich, excel’ is as strong today as it was in 1903 when the school first opened.

Schools want high-quality maths resources that provide real value for money. The White Rose Maths premium resources package helped one London school to find all the materials they need without blowing their budget! Year 6 Leader Ms Nazia Dar describes the positive impact using White Rose Education premium resources has had on maths learning at her school.

Nazia approached White Rose Education to ask about our premium resources, a comprehensive subscription package based on our schemes of learning. They were already using our schemes to follow a mastery in maths approach, dipping into our free resources online for support. With no access to the full spectrum of resources, teachers were making up their maths questions, a process that took too much time to prepare. Also, the school wanted to ensure a consistent approach across all year groups by using a trusted bank of materials provided by the same supplier.

The school took out a premium resources annual subscription and quickly began using the wide range of support across the school from Reception to Year 6. This gave all teachers and children access to worksheets for every small step, teaching videos, end of block assessments, end of year assessments, front of class teaching slides, Flashback 4 cards, and ‘True or False’ sheets. At the end of the first year, they extended their subscription for twelve months and have continued to do so ever since.

All year groups use the resources extensively as a key part of maths learning. Pupils have access to their current year group’s curriculum and below, allowing for revision where necessary. The school told us they find the videos the most helpful resource in the package, effective for the teachers’ continued professional development and as a home learning tool when children have to isolate or catch up on missed work.

In terms of overall impact, the school is impressed with all the subscription package provided. Specifically, they mentioned how the teaching slides and overviews have been pivotal to teachers’ understanding of sequential lessons and reducing their workload. The videos are similar in giving teachers a deeper insight into topics before delivery in the classroom. As for the children, their understanding of maths has increased thanks to the concrete and pictorial learning methods, as has their maths vocabulary, which they now use more freely in class to explain their reasoning to peers and teachers. Pupils also feel empowered through the self-marking mechanism and the ability to self-correct their answers.

Nazia had these wonderful words to say:

“Overall, our school could not be happier with the resources from White Rose Maths, which all teachers and pupils in each year group now use daily as part of our maths learning. The schemes are great and this is a cost-effective way to access them, which is important on a budget and provides excellent value for money. I am a big WRM fan – and Tiny brings it all alive too, even in Year 6!”
